Sequence of Events

The 17 November 1939 was closely linked with the national demonstrations against the occupying power which took place in Prague on the anniversary of the foundation of the Czechoslovak state on 28 October 1939. Konstantin von Neurath resided in the Prague castle as "Reichsprotektor" of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, assisted by Karl Hermann Frank, a former Sudeten German Deputy, as his State Secretary.

In the morning hours of November 17 nine of them (Klima, Weinert, Cerny, Skorkovsky, Matousek, Adamec, Koula, Safranek and Fruehwirt), the organizers of Opletal’s funeral, were shot in Prague-Ruzyne. At about the same time, between 03:30 and 08:00 hours, all students’ hostels, university buildings and institutes in Prague, Brno and Pribram were occupied by German army and police units. Hundreds of Prague students were arrested (V.F.W.’ s article in the London exile organ "Cechoslovak" of 14 November 1941 put the total number of those arrested at 3,000) and transported to the riding school in Prague-Ruzyne.
A "selection" was made there and members of fascist, organizations, foreigners and students younger than 20 years were released. All the others were deported on November 19 to the Oranienburg concentration camp. A number of students who were arrested in Brno suffered a similar fate.
Another repressive, measure was the closing of all Czech universities and technical colleges, nominally for three years; in fact they remained closed for the duration of the war.

e a tutti voi, come in questa che potrebbe sembrare un ripetersi inevitabile di una catastrofe, vi battete tenacemente contro le menzogne e le barbarie e lo svilimento intronato
